What to Expect During Construction
A Client Guide to the Custom Home Building Experience
The construction phase of a custom home is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience for families who have never built before. Peters Custom Homes provides a structured, transparent process that keeps clients informed, engaged, and confident from groundbreaking through final walk-through.
Understanding what happens during each construction phase — and what decisions need to be made at each milestone — helps families plan their schedules, manage expectations, and enjoy the remarkable experience of watching their home take shape.
This guide outlines the major construction phases, communication protocols, and key client decision points that Peters Custom Homes manages throughout every project.
Our Approach
Construction begins with site preparation: clearing, grading, erosion control installation, and utility rough-in. Foundation work follows — whether slab-on-grade, crawl space, or full basement — and represents the first major visible milestone. Families often visit during the foundation pour to see the footprint of their home take physical form for the first time.
Framing is the most dramatic construction phase. Within 4–8 weeks, the structural skeleton of the home rises and families can walk through rooms, experience ceiling heights, and verify spatial relationships. Peters Custom Homes schedules a formal framing walk with every client — an opportunity to review dimensions, discuss any refinements, and mark outlets and switch locations.
After framing, the home is dried in with roofing, windows, and exterior sheathing — creating a weather-tight shell. Rough mechanical systems follow: HVAC ductwork, plumbing, and electrical wiring are installed within the walls before insulation and drywall enclose them.
Design Collaboration
Peters Custom Homes assigns a dedicated project superintendent to every build. Your superintendent is your primary point of contact during construction — available for site visits, phone calls, and questions throughout the process.
We provide weekly written progress reports with photographs documenting work completed, upcoming milestones, and any items requiring client input. These reports create a visual timeline of your home's construction that families treasure long after move-in.
Construction & Craftsmanship
Quality control is continuous throughout Peters Custom Homes construction. Our superintendent performs daily inspections, and we engage independent third-party inspectors for structural, mechanical, and energy performance verification at critical milestones.
The finish phase — drywall, painting, trim carpentry, cabinetry installation, flooring, and fixture setting — transforms the construction site into a home. This phase requires the most client attention, as final material selections, paint colors, and hardware choices are confirmed and installed.
Living the Result
Before delivery, Peters Custom Homes conducts a comprehensive quality review, corrects any punch-list items, performs professional cleaning, and schedules a formal walk-through with the family. We provide a detailed homeowner orientation covering mechanical systems, maintenance schedules, and warranty information.
