Walk ten new estates in Myers Park, SouthPark, or Marvin and you will find white oak in nine of them. That is not fashion alone. White oak is dimensionally calmer than most alternatives, takes reactive and wire-brushed finishes without turning orange, and its closed grain resists moisture better than red oak.

Plain-sawn white oak shows the cathedral figure most people picture. Rift and quartered white oak reads as long, straight grain with occasional ray fleck - quieter, more expensive, and noticeably more stable across seasons.

Wide planks are the current standard, and width is exactly where Carolina humidity intervenes. A solid 10-inch plank will move visibly between February and August. Engineered, not veneer. Hardwax oil delivers the most natural, matte, touchable surface and can be spot-repaired without refinishing a whole room, but it wants periodic re-oiling. A high-quality waterborne urethane in a matte sheen is more forgiving with children, dogs, and staff cleaning routines, and repairs are less local.
