Interior design is not a finishing touch on a luxury custom home — it is a discipline that should be present from the first schematic conversation. Where the kitchen island lands, how the powder bath is sized, whether the primary suite has a sitting niche, how natural light reaches the great-room sectional — these are interior-design decisions disguised as architecture, and resolving them after construction documents are sealed is expensive.

Peters Custom Homes has worked this way since 2016, originally through external designer partnerships and now primarily through Emerald & Oak Design Studio, our in-house design partnership led by Miriam Peters. We also collaborate routinely with families' existing designers when those relationships are already established.

The Collaborative Process

Phase 1 (Discovery) includes the interior designer in every meeting. We do not treat "the build" and "the interiors" as separate workstreams that converge later. Furniture plans, traffic flow, sightlines, scale, and palette are part of the foundational conversation.

Phase 2 (Site Selection) includes the designer because views, light angles, and lot orientation drive interior decisions. The designer sees the lot before the architect's first sketch — and contributes to the program brief that the architect inherits.

Phase 3 (Design) is where the designer's role intensifies. They co-author the floor plan rather than reacting to it. Cabinetry depths, ceiling treatments, millwork profiles, plumbing locations, and electrical placements are all driven by the interior vocabulary the designer is establishing.

Architectural Collaboration

When Emerald & Oak Design Studio is the designer of record, the integration is seamless — Miriam Peters is part of the firm, every selection meeting is staffed by both companies, and there is no coordination gap.

When the family has an existing designer relationship — which we encourage families to keep — Emerald & Oak steps back into a coordination role rather than the lead role. Your designer drives aesthetic direction; Miriam ensures the design integrates correctly with construction sequencing, mechanical systems, and structural realities.

Either way, the designer is in the construction trailer for major milestones: framing review, mechanical rough-in, drywall, cabinet install, and final finish review. Interior designers who only show up at the end miss the windows where their input is most valuable.

Building Private Estates

Selections are run jointly. Miriam (or your designer, if external) attends every selection session. The family does not have to be the bridge between designer and builder — the bridge is structurally part of the team.

Cabinetry, millwork, and built-ins are detailed against interior elevations rather than just plan drawings. Most custom homes are detailed only in plan, which produces the recurring problem of "the cabinets look smaller in real life than they did on paper." Interior elevations prevent that.

Lighting design (both fixture selection and circuit layout) is led by the interior designer working with our low-voltage and electrical trades. Layered light is the single most underweighted variable in luxury homes — getting it right requires designer involvement during electrical rough-in, not at fixture install.
