Answers to Common Questions About Creating a Significant Residence
Creating an estate home is a significant undertaking, and families naturally have questions about the process, timeline, investment, and what to expect. Peters Custom Homes provides candid answers to the questions we are most frequently asked.
These answers reflect our experience building architecturally significant residences for discerning families. While every project is unique, the following guidance applies broadly to the estate building process.
We encourage families to contact us directly for answers to questions specific to their situation. Every confidential consultation is an opportunity to provide tailored guidance.
Our Approach
How long does it take to build a custom estate home? — The complete process from initial consultation to move-in typically spans eighteen to thirty-six months. Design development requires six to twelve months, pre-construction planning two to four months, and construction twelve to twenty-four months depending on scale and complexity.
What is involved in designing a custom home? — The design process begins with understanding the family's vision and evaluating the homesite. An architect develops the design through schematic, design development, and construction document phases, with the builder providing cost and constructability guidance throughout.
Do you work with architects? — Absolutely. Architectural collaboration is central to our practice. We work with the family's selected architect or recommend architects whose design philosophy aligns with the family's vision. Our collaborative approach ensures that design ambition and construction excellence are aligned.
Design Collaboration
Can you build on land we already own? — Yes. We conduct thorough homesite evaluation for properties families have already acquired, assessing every factor that will influence the design and construction of their residence. We also help families evaluate potential properties before purchase.
What areas do you build in? — Our primary service area encompasses Charlotte and its surrounding communities, including Myers Park, Eastover, South Charlotte, Marvin, Weddington, and Lake Norman. We also accept select engagements throughout North and South Carolina.
How early should we engage a builder? — As early as possible. Engaging a builder before or during the design phase allows for cost guidance, constructability input, and the kind of collaborative planning that produces superior results. Many families contact us before they have selected an architect or identified a homesite.
Construction & Craftsmanship
What does Peters Custom Homes do differently? — We limit the number of engagements we accept each year, ensuring that every project receives the direct involvement of our senior leadership. Our Peters Method provides a structured five-phase process that brings discipline and care to every aspect of the estate building journey.
We maintain daily on-site leadership during construction, foster genuine collaboration with architects and designers, and build with materials and methods selected for generational performance.
Living the Result
What should we look for in a luxury home builder? — Look for a builder who demonstrates architectural understanding, who values collaboration with design professionals, who limits their volume to maintain quality, and who can demonstrate a portfolio of completed homes that reflect genuine design distinction.
The right builder should feel like a trusted advisor—someone who listens carefully, communicates transparently, and demonstrates unwavering commitment to the quality of your home.
